Hey This is Mike Ambassador Bruny with Another solo episode of No More Reasonable Doubt.
The show designed to empower young professionals of color at the beginning of the careers. We are on a mission to remove doubt, increase confidence and help you have more impact at work.
Today we are going to talk about something that happened to me the other day when I was going on my morning walk.
Listen in:
I put the information out on Facebook and people really responded to it so I thought I’d share it with you dear listener.
Here we go:
How real do you want to keep it? Woke up this morning and was gonna go for a walk in my complex (I call it taking a lap).
I come to the end of my driveway and could go left or right. I usually go left. But I noticed this old white lady walking in that direction (weights on her wrist, getting her exercise on).
My first thought? “I better go right so I don’t scare the old white lady.”
I had to pause when that thought hit me. Where the F* did I learn that shit. No one taught me that. My dad never told me to do that. It wasn’t in the Black man’s handbook.
When I was Emerson’s age (My 1yr old son) I wouldn’t have even given it a second thought. What happened between then and now?
Media, subconscious programming? I don’t know but I wanted to call your attention to it.
Why?
Because with all the surface stuff we are dealing with around race and diversity (yeah I’m looking at you Tech) there are subconscious things that are harder to explain and even harder to understand.
Just a little something for you to think about or not on a Throw Back Thursday #TBT . Pictures are cool but I’m interested in why we are how we are. Oh, and how we change (if so desired) moving forward.
P.S. I went left on my walking trail today. It’s not my job to make her feel comfortable with my presence. I’m not invisible nor will I pretend to be.
That is my story dear listener. Now how does this relate to being a young professional at work?
You may be going out of your way to make others feel comfortable with who YOU are. Stop it!
Deal with the uncomfortable and get to the reason “why” there is an uncomfortable feeling for you or for them.
That’s all for now. I hope you enjoyed this episode and will consider subscribing so you get episodes like this and our interviews sent directly to your inbox.

Hey our goal is to help, excuse me, empower young professionals of color at the beginning of their careers to go from invisible to invincible.

Peace.
